Steps / Instructions:
Please note that the product information is in Dutch language. Therefore, please refer to to the instructions below to get you going with these lion’s mane plugs.
Preparation:
- Obtain healthy, fresh hardwood logs. The logs should be free of disease, rot or insect infestation.
- Prepare a clean, well-lit and ventilated work area.
Preparing the Logs:
- Ensure that the logs are a suitable length (ideally around 30-80cm) and around 15-30cm in diameter.
- Lightly sand the bark of the logs to remove any dirt or loose bark. This will help to create a clean surface for inserting the wood plugs.
Drilling and Inoculating:
- Use the drill to drill holes in the logs approximately 40mm deep, with a spacing of around 10-15cm.
- Insert a wood plug into each drilled hole. Use a mallet or rubber mallet to gently tap the plug into the hole, ensuring it is firmly seated.
Sealing and Labelling:
- Melt beeswax or candle wax and apply to the top of each wood plug to seal the hole. This will help to retain moisture and discourage competitors.
- Label each log to indicate the mushroom type and inoculation date.
Incubation:
- Place the inoculated logs in a cool, shady location where they can grow.
Harvesting:
- Depending on the mushroom type, the first mushrooms may appear several months to a year after inoculation. Once they are fully grown, carefully cut them from the log.
- Following these steps will help you successfully grow mushrooms on logs using wood plugs.
Remember that each mushroom type may require specific growing conditions, so it is advisable to consult additional information about the mushroom type you choose.
